Police: Mike Millett-
No report
Paulette stated that Sandi from Astro wants to know how the police will be handling the no
smoking ordinance on the Park District property.
Mike stated that as of today, the Police Department will not enforce the policy. They will
support it and respond to any complaints regarding smoking issues. Sandi from Astro is
concerned because many of her employees do smoke.
Park District: Terri Ebner—
Teri stated that the summer brochure will be out in 1 to 1 1/z week with a nice page for BG
Days. Paulette thanked to Teri and the Park District for the publicity.
Teri stated that the Park District will run the golf tournament, the stampede, the dog show and
the BG Idol contest this year. Karen stated that she has some reservations about the Park
District running the BG Idol but will discuss that in her report.
Parade: Joe Tenerelli/Ken Lazar -
Sara stated that in a Chamber meeting, a question came up if there could be a theme for the
parade. She already has a grand sponsor for the parade. Joe stated that the theme idea has
been done in the past but there were problems with the committee making timely decisions.
Joe said that the problem is that too many people were involved. He said that the best solution
would be to throw ideas into a hat and pull out 5. The committee could then make a decision
from those five ideas.
Paulette mentioned that the Buffalo Grove Fire Department was celebrating their 25th
anniversary and wondered if Joe will do anything with that event for the parade. Joe says he
has no plans to use the event for the parade.
Karen suggested anyone with a suggestion, bring it to the next meeting
Mobile Com: Roger Remblake - Not present
Fun and Food: Rick Kahen/Mo Welborn - Not present
Rick emailed his report to Paulette. After discussion and conference with various groups, the
Buddy Baseball game will be on Thursday at the Miracle Field. We will hold on discussion
regarding the start time until the next meeting.
Fire Department: George Michehl - Not present
Public Works: Dave Haisma/Brett Robinson - Not present
Dave e-mailed Paulette about the comment last meeting of the need to trim the trees for the
carnival. Dave stated that Public Works trims the trees on the causeway, but the trees on Park
District property is the responsibility of the Park District. Astro needs some trees trimmed for
the Ferris wheel to fit properly. Debra has asked for a map of the layout for the rides by June
1 st to determine which trees need to be trimmed.
Trustee Liaison: DeAnn Glover—
DeAnn stated that the REMAX balloon is usually on campus on Sunday. Last year, they
brought it on Saturday by error, and Karen let him stay. Karen thinks that Sunday might be
better with the fireworks.
Chamber/Corporate Sponsorship: Sara Herman/Sharon Feld—
Sara stated that they continue to raise funds for the festival and they are progressing. She has
found a grand parade sponsor.
Karen wants to get a Saturday night Main Stage entertainment sponsor. She states that she
will be using more money than usual for that night's act. Karen was given the OK to book the
act she is considering. Paulette asked about the BBQ Showdown sponsor. Sara will continue
to follow up on the sponsor.
Sara stated that four restaurants have responded so far, with a deadline of April 17 for the BG
restaurants that participated last year. The four restaurants include the Continental, Culvers,
Kaleidoscoops, and Peguino's. All will be serving Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Continental
and Peguino's will also serve on Monday.
Food Tent: Steve Schultz/Sandi Carothers —
Steve stated that the letters went out this past week to the not-for-profit groups. He sent out a
total of 10 letters with a response deadline of April 30. He will then do his second mailing.
Setup/Take down: Tom Johns —Not present
Arts and Crafts: Jim Pawlak/Joan Pawlak -
No report
Dessert Challenge: Jane Primack/Joan Pawlak -
Jane stated that she has finalized the application, which includes a line for the contestants to
sign indicating that they have read the rules. She is still refining the rules.
She has sent a letter to the Harper College Hospitality program, asking for a cooking
demonstration. She has not received a response yet. She has a couple of other ideas if they do
not wish to participate.
She has sent a letter to the middle school teacher who was the judge last year. She has not
received a response. She has also contacted the individual who was upset last year and wrote
to the Village. He has agreed to be a judge for the Junior division. With the two owners and
sponsors of the contest as judges, she now has 3 of the needed 6 judges for the contest. She
wants 3 for each division, Adult and Junior/Teen.
Jane has sent out 22 letters requesting donations for prizes. She has received a response back
on two, one from Geimers Greenhouses and one from the sponsor, Chocolate Marvels. She
stated that Crate and Barrel does not give donations except for corporate events. For Salton,
she was referred the New Jersey office. Sara stated she should follow through as she might get
a positive response. Sara also suggested Abt and Cookies by Design for prizes.
Jane stated that her goal is for each child in the Junior division to receive a prize, even for a
good effort. She is investigating finding enough prizes. She has a lead but needs to see if it
comes through.
Grilling Challenge: Chuck Posniak/Ken Carothers
Chuck stated that he has come up with a new name, the BG Days BBQ Showdown,
He has a preliminary set of rules, but no application done yet. He is looking for gifts for
prizes. He is still looking for a sponsor.
Carnival: Debra Jess/Penni Jess -
Debra stated that they were going to try something a little different this year. She wants to try
to see how many tickets were sold per day. This will be helpful for the food vendors. Debra
also stated that Sandi is not raising the carnival prices.
Entertainment: Karen Danenberg—
Karen stated that last year, BG Idol ran its course. A discussion occurred about the Park
District running the event this year. Karen wants to be assured that the program the Park
District is proposing is open to anyone in the Village instead of only offered to individuals in
the Park District program. Karen wants to run an event called Star Tracks, featuring various
Park District programs. A comment was made that a mixture of dance and music programs,
incorporating adults if they want to perform, such at the Star Tracks program, will draw a
different crowd. Karen agreed to meet with Kim and the two people in charge of the
Performing Arts program for the Park District to get all the logistics settled.
Friday night Karen scheduled a Neil Diamond sound a like, called Steve Richards. He will do a
number of costume changes. Karen states she has a signed contract.
Sunday night Karen has scheduled another act but does not yet have a contract.
Karen stated that for the Saturday night entertainment, she did not want the usual acts. Right
now she is looking at a band from the 70's which is charging more than the usual price. She
hopes to negotiate a lower fee, but it will still be more than she usually pays for an act. The
consensus of the committee is to go for that act on Saturday night.
She has a Jazz band in the Beer Tent on Friday night. There will be live band karaoke in the
Beer Tent Friday night.
The street entertainment will be similar to last years.
Audio/Visual: Doug Primack/Adam Moodhe—
No report
PublicityL Penni Jess -
Penni stated that she has been talking to the newspaper about events of the festival. Mary
Moodhe will be putting items up on Channel 6 for publicity, also.
Penni asked for information regarding any of the events for the festival, particularly the Dessert
Challenge or the BBQ Showdown. Jane gave Penni a blurb for both.
Photography: Hal Norman/Jim Pawlak -
No report
Glow Necklaces: Lori Hackett- Not present
VIP Party: Sharan Tash/Arlene Kozemzak—
Dorfler's will provide meat.
Arlene had questions about the music for this year. Karen stated that she has the Jazz band for
the Beer Tent and will pipe it in for the VIP party. That should work well with their Mardi
Gras theme. Sara stated that if anyone wanted to exchange information with Sharan, they
could talk to either Sharon Feld or herself.
Information Booth: Ken Lazar—
No report
BG Juniors:
No report
Village Liaison: Bill Brimm—Not present
Your 2 Cents Worth: All committee members
Sharon Feld suggested that since the VIP party was using Mardi Gras as a theme, it could also
be a nice tie in to use it for the parade theme. Paulette stated it could be thrown into the hat as
Joe had suggested.
Arlene questioned why there has never been a beauty contest, such as Miss Buffalo Grove.
Paulette stated that no ever wanted to run the contest in the past. Today, we run into
discrimination with questioning where is the male contest. Arlene said that they had it years
ago. Paulette stated that we could save it for two years from now when the Village celebrates
its 50 anniversary with a 50's theme. They did have a beauty contest 50 years ago. DeAnn
said that we might want it to run past the Village Board. DeAnn said that setting up and
running a beauty contest is a lot of work. One would have to plan a few years ahead. The
beauty contests are quite rigid with their rules and the contest would have to stick to the
criteria. The person planning the contest would need at least 2 years to plan it, working on
nothing but the contest. The idea has been tabled for other meetings.
Terri asked if anything was done to cater to the seniors. Karen stated that the Bingo was one
avenue. Sharon asked about a senior talent contest or a prom Queen and King, which is very
popular with the seniors right now. Karen suggested it for the Star Tracks program.
Seniors often perform square dancing which would be welcomed as a performance in the craft
area.
Ed was curious why no beer is served out by the Main Stage. He said that it would be more
convenient to have beer out there if anyone wanted another glass, rather than go to the Beer
Tent. Paulette stated that we need to weigh the advantages for the convenience of alcohol
consumption, with security, lighting and other issues. Beer consumption would go up,
increasing sales. Sara stated that part of the problem selling beer near the Main stage is that
they can't see to ID people and that creates other security issues. Mike stated that the logistics
of security, with a beer truck near the golf course was considerable. Sara said that the only
area to place the second beer truck would be near the Porta potties. Mike would consider the
ideas of beer being sold on the field. DeAnn said the committee would have to bow to the
Police Department's decision. Sara said that the VIP tent would work, they could set up 4
tappers, have enough light for the ID's. Mike will look into it and report back the next
meeting.
Dave Besser asked about how the restaurants are allowed to serve in the Food Tent. He
knows of a Wheeling pizza place who wants to get into the Food Tent. Sara explained that
only one of each type of food item is allowed in the Food Tent due to the limited spaces. They
do not want 5 thin crust pizza booths if there are only 16 spaces. There are so many thin crust
pizza places that they have a lottery for the thin crust pizza. Sara suggested that the restaurant
could apply to come in on Monday or could offer to serve a food other than pizza.. Sara told
Dave to instruct his friend to contact the Chamber.
Jim made a motion to adjourn. Ken seconded the motion.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15.
Respectfully submitted,
Jane Primack
