Welcome
The meeting was called to order at 7:07PM.
Approval of Minutes
A motion was made by Sharon Borstein to amend the minutes to reflect that she did not attend
the meeting with Amy Amdur to discuss the winter art show and that the Artists' League
th
members were not going to speak about their work at the February 10 show. The motion
was seconded by Steve Bulmash and the motion was unanimously approved.
Chair Report
Linda congratulated Sharon Borstein and the Artists' League on a beautiful show at the Indian
Trails Library. She thanked Carol Berman and Lynne Schneider for attending the opening
reception.
Condolences were given to Sandy Greenberg on the loss of her mother-in-law.
Comments from the Staff Liaison
Carol told the commission that there were changes in responsibilities at Village Hall and all the
Arts Commission projects, including the Symphonic Band, would now be under her supervision
including all clerical assistance. Carol asked that the Arts Commissioners assist her by providing
time to come into the office to help with mailings and other projects. Linda will talk to Howard
Green to request that the Symphonic Band Board take over a lot of the duties that the village
hall staff had been providing for their group.
Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band
th
The spring concert is scheduled for April 20 at Stevenson High School. Carol is working with
Buffalo Grove High School to get a date for the fall concert. She asked the commissioners to
check their schedules since she will be seeking volunteers to assist with the spring concert at
the March meeting.
th
The band is booked for the July 4 concert at Rotary Green and also on the Friday before the
th
start of the Art Festival July 12 . In addition, the Jazz Band will be playing at Willow Stream
rd
Park on July 23 . Howard Green is seeking additional summer dates for the full band and/or
jazz band.
Artists' League.
During the month of February there is an all member show at Indian Trails Library. A reception
th
was held on February 10 . Sharon Borstein reported that the show is wonderful, the pieces
displayed were very colorful and the reception was well attended. The Artists' League has
booked a spot for another show in February of 2014. Sharon is looking for another site fall
2013.
The March meeting, date to be determined, will have as the guest speaker Larry Goldberg.
Art Festival
Sandy Greenberg, Chris Gibson and Sharon Borstein were the village's representatives to the
Amdur Productions jury for the 2013 festivals. Sandy reported that she saw a lot of wonderful
work. Chris felt that the artists that submitted were much the same as she has seen before. A
number of the artists whose work the village owns were in the group. Sharon felt that some of
the work was amazing but others disappointing. All agreed there were a lot of jewelers in the
mix.
Carol reported that the management company for Town Center has agreed to allow us to use
the center for this year's show.
Village Manager Dane Bragg sent a letter of response to Amdur Productions in regards to their
Letter of Understanding. This letter contained the list of concerns on the document that were
generated by the commission at our January 9, 2013 meeting. To-date we have not had a
response from Amdur.
Old Business
Great Big Little Art Show
Sharon Borstein met with Mark Andrews and Barbara Herman to discuss this project.
They decided to partner with The National Veteran's Art Museum in Chicago. This organization
works with veterans through their art to provide therapy and a venue for their work. A motion
was made by Sharon to partner with this charitable organization and it was seconded by
Barbara Herman. The motion was unanimously passed. Carol will obtain final Village Board
approval for this project and charity,
Many commission members have sent Sharon a list of people they would like to have as part of
the show. She is working to compile a list and will begin to send letters to these people
requesting a painting. The suggested date of the show is spring of 2014.
Winter Show
Fran Sachs provided a report in her absence. The show is proposed for fall of 2013 on a
Saturday in late October or early November. She contacted the Buffalo Grove Arboretum who
wanted $12,000 to have the event at their facility. She also provided quotes from school
district 102 and Cooper Junior High. Fran's concern was that we would need a large amount of
volunteers to manage the show. Fran felt that due to the cost of the facility rental and the lack
of volunteers needed we should not move forward with this project.
Sharon also suggested a one day holiday pop-up gallery that could be a combination of artists
and juried crafts for a high quality show.
The commission members felt that they would like to wait until Fran was in attendance to
discuss this project in greater detail.
New Business
Steve Trilling reported on the meeting he and Carol Berman had with Dan Schimmel of the
Buffalo Grove Park District concerning the new performing art center. Dan went over the
project with them and discussed the use of the 38,000 sq. ft. facility. The auditorium will be
able to seat approximately 400 people and the other rooms will be used for classrooms, dance
facilities and even possibly cooking classes. Dan said that he would be happy to have the Arts
Commission use the space when available. The Arts Commission was looking for a possible
enclosed gallery space which Dan said would not be feasible with their current plans.
Village Report
th
Carol reported that the Volunteer Reception will be held on February 24 at 1:30PM at the
Arboretum Club. Barbara Herman is being honored for ten years on the commission.
Adjourn
A motion to adjourn was made by Shari Ginsberg and seconded by Lori Lapping. The motion
was unanimously approved.
The next meeting is scheduled for March 13, 2013 at 7:OOpm in the EOC.
Meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM
Sincerely,
Carol Berman
