PETITIONER REQUEST -1
Minor Building Renvoations- Proposed renovations to increase security and improve functionality of the
building
ART RECOMMENDATION /NOTES
West Wing -Create fire door(T xT metal door). Relocate window set to match existing windows. Create
office 945 square feet.
Southwest Corner-Two existing coves (wing wall). Fill in to create two storage spaces. The proposed
change would not extend beyond the the border of the building. Concern regarding the "fill-in"would
create a monotonous flush wall. The office (45'x21')would be 945 square feet. The storage area (9'x 22')
would be 396 square feet.
The Park District is proposing A) exterior wall face brick to match the existing 4"face brick; B) new wall 1"
set back from existing wing wall. Concern that 1"would not create a significant difference in shadow.
Discussion regarding column to improve monotonous wall; consider creating fake window with tinted
glass to break up the wall.
The ART made the following recommendations:
A) 2 windows located at the proposed storage area - relocated or new windows to match existing.
Windows should be opaque.
B) New wall to 4"set back from existing wing wall.
C) Light shall be installed above proposed new door, as required by Code.
D) (Optional) Install additional door as noted above, 3'x 7' metal door to achieve symmetry on the
proposed addition.
PETITIONER REQUEST - II

Dear Bob:
On behalf of the Buffalo Grove Park District I would like to request permission to
eliminate the charcoal staining of the split face block dumpster enclosure at the
Alcott Center.
The buff split face block is actually more appealing and is a nice contrast to the
asphalt parking lot and blends in nicely with the concrete curbing.
As you are aware, the District is also planting arborvitae around the enclosure.
Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 847-850-2110.
I thank you and the ART Committee for this consideration.
Sincerely,
Michael Rylko

SUBJECT: Alcott Center Trash Enclosure—Modification of ART Requirements
Mike,
Pursuant to your correspondence dated August 2,2004 regarding the Appearance Review
Team (ART) requirements for the Alcott Center trash enclosure, the ART has reviewed the
enclosure as constructed as well as your request to allow the natural split face concrete block
color in lieu of the required dark brown stain.
While the Appearance Plan stipulates that the materials used on a refuse enclosure shall be
consistent with the building on a site, the Alcott Center trash enclosure is a relatively minor
element of the overall site modification plan. The enclosure is not proximate to the principal
building and is not visible from public streets. Several residential property owners are
adjacent to the site, however, the enclosure will be landscaped so as to substantially screen it
from view on all sides.
Since the primary aesthetic impact will fall on persons using the parking area and the Park
District has commented that the unstained split face block has an appealing appearance, it
appears reasonable to allow the enclosure to remain unstained. It is the Village's
understanding that the exterior walls of the enclosure will receive a clear finish to protect the
walls from graffiti.
