AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 2.14 (POLICE DEPARTMENT)
AND CHAPTER 2.50 (FIRE DEPARTMENT) OF THE VILLAGE OF
BUFFALO GROVE MUNICIPAL CODE
WHEREAS, the Village of Buffalo Grove is a Home Rule Unit by virtue
of the provisions of the Constitution of the State of Illinois of 1970;
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE VILLAGE
OF BUFFALO GROVE, COOK AND LAKE COUNTIES, ILLINOIS:
SECTION 1. Subsection B and Subsection D of Section 2.14.020 of the
Village of Buffalo Grove Municipal Code are amended to read as follows:
B. The chief of police is authorized to appoint two
deputy chiefs upon the approval of the Village Manager. The deputy
chiefs shall be appointed solely from the members of the Buffalo
Grove Police Department holding the rank of sergeant. The chief
of police is also authorized to appoint, solely from the officers
of the Buffalo Grove Police Department holding the rank of sergeant,
three commanders upon the approval of the Village Manager. The
chief of police is authorized to suspend or discharge any or all
of the officers holding such positions in accordance with adopted
Village personnel policies and procedures. The deputy police
chiefs and commanders are exempt positions in regards to Chapter
2.28 of this Code.
D. The rank of sergeant and police officer shall be
appointed by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners as provided
in Chapter 2.28 of this Code, and the rules and regulations of the
Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.
SECTION 2. Section 2.50.020 Subsection B of the Village of Buffalo
Grove Municipal Code is amended in its entirety to read as follows:
B. Vacancies in the rank of captain shall be filled by
appointment of the fire chief, solely from the members of the Buffalo
Grove Fire Department holding the rank of lieutenant, upon the approval
of the Village Manager. The fire chief is authorized to suspend or
discharge any or all members appointed by him to such positions in

accordance with adopted Village personnel policies and procedures.
Positions filled by appointment of the fire chief are exempt
positions in regards to Chapter 2.28 of this Code.
SECTION 3. Subsection C and Subsection D are hereby added to
Section 2.50.020 of the Village of Buffalo Grove Municipal Code as follows:
C. In the event any of the persons appointed by the
fire chief to the position of captain are discharged from said
positions, said person or persons shall revert to their permanent
rank, if any, in the fire department as established by the Board of
Fire and Police Commissioners.
D. The rank of lieutenant and firefighter /paramedic
shall be appointed by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
of the Village as provided in Chapter 2.28 of this Code and the
rules and regulations of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.
All full -time members of the department appointed by the Board of
Fire and Police Commissioners shall be certified pursuant to the
requirements of the State as Firefighter II and EMT -P (paramedic)
in the Village's designated mobile intensive care system on the
date of employment by the Village.
SECTION 4. That this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect
from and after its passage and approval.
